Whipple Supercharger Oil Servicing FAQ Yella Terra | Customer servicing guide | Automotive applications Use the correct supercharger oil, check the level regularly and avoid overfilling. Oil type, quantity and service interval depend on the compressor and installation. Always follow the applicable Whipple installation manual and service instructions; the attached general maintenance sheet does not cover every model. 1 Which oil should I use Use genuine Whipple Supercharger oil specified for your unit. Do not assume engine oil, gear oil or another brand of supercharger oil is interchangeable. Whipple application manuals specify Whipple SC oil. [2, 3] 2 Can I mix different oils No. Whipple’s supplied maintenance sheet expressly warns against mixing supercharger oils. If the existing oil is unknown, confirm the correct replacement and servicing procedure with Yella Terra or Whipple before topping up. [1] 3 How often should I check the oil level Check it at every engine oil change or normal engine service. Inspect the belt condition and tension at the same time, and maintain the air filter according to its instructions. Continue the vehicle manufacturer’s normal maintenance schedule. [1, 3] 4 How often should I change the oil There is no single interval for every Whipple supercharger. The following are examples, not interchangeable service schedules. Confirm the interval for your exact kit and its operating conditions. Do not automatically apply a road-use interval to every application. 5 How do I read the sight glass Check with the engine stopped and the vehicle or compressor level, under the conditions specified in its manual. The supplied sheet shows filling to the centre of the sight glass. Some application manuals describe a lower acceptable level after operation; use the range for your model. [1, 2] Filling and servicing questions 6 Should I pour in the whole bottle Not automatically. A replacement bottle’s volume is not a universal fill quantity. Whipple supplies pre-measured bottles with some new kits, but servicing an existing unit requires the correct model-specific quantity and level check. Never add a full bottle on top of oil already in the unit. [2; servicing guidance] 7 Why can the level change after running Whipple explains that oil enters the bearings after operation, which can lower the visible level. For example, the GM SUV LT 21–24 R4 manual allows a stopped level between the bottom and centre of the sight glass after running. Do not keep topping up without checking your applicable manual. [2] 8 What if I overfill the supercharger Correct the level before further operation, using the model-specific service procedure. Whipple warns that overfilling can cause severe compressor damage. A sight glass completely covered in oil is not a reason to add more. If the level is unclear, ask Yella Terra or a qualified installer to check it. [2, 3; servicing guidance] 9 Are older Lysholm units serviced the same way No. The supplied sheet separately specifies 5W-50 fully synthetic motor oil for Lysholm compressors and a dipstick level at the top of the knurled area. Those instructions are expressly Lysholm-only and must not be applied to a Whipple compressor. Identify the unit before selecting oil. [1] 10 Why does the supplied sheet list other oil brands The sheet lists Whipple SCOIL-155 and SCOIL-200, Ford Motorcraft XL-4 and GM 12345982 for the units it covers. This is not blanket approval for every later Whipple model. Use genuine Whipple oil for this servicing guide and obtain model-specific confirmation before using an alternative. Never mix oils. [1, 2] 11 Can I change the oil myself Only if you can identify the unit and follow its service procedure. Drain or extract the old oil as specified, refill carefully and refit the plug using the correct seal and torque. Do not assume plug sizes, capacities or torque values are shared across models. If access or the procedure is unclear, use a qualified workshop. [General servicing guidance] 12 What should I do if the level keeps dropping Arrange an inspection for leakage or another fault rather than repeatedly topping up. If the oil is contaminated or a new abnormal noise appears, stop using the unit until it has been assessed. Give the workshop the compressor model, serial number, vehicle details and service history.
